(9th AND 10th) Combined Discussion #19

Another combined discussion! In light of the recent Oscars showing (which some of you watched but others did not), I wanted to bring up a cultural question this time.

First things first, however. Begin by reading these articles:
We know of Seth McFarlane as the creator of American Dad, Family Guy and Robot Chicken. He also voices both Peter and Stewie Griffin on Family Guy. Many people were very surprised (and anxious) to see him hosting the famous Academy Awards -- and still others were excited. In light of his performance, our discussion this time focuses on the idea of jokes, what makes them funny, and when they start to become uncomfortable or insulting.

As you read through the articles, consider these questions (choose only one to answer!):
  1. When does a joke cross the line into "bad taste"?
  2. Who in society decides what is "funny" and what is simply rude? How do we know where the line is?
  3. Because we live in a nation which embraces free speech, does this give us the right to say exactly what we want, when we want (jokes included)?
Directions:

  • Choose a discussion question, and answer it completely according to the directions. Indicate in your comment which discussion question you are answering.
  • Use the pen name you provided at the beginning of the year.
  • Use correct spelling and grammar at all times.
  • In order to receive an "A," you must not only post your answer, but comment on a peer's ideas as well. Please remain positive and polite when doing so.

Due Date: This post will remain open for comments and discussion until Monday, March 18, 2013 at 5:00 PM; after this time comments will close.

You're getting THREE WEEKS to answer, so please come back after your initial post and continue adding to the discussion!

  1. I am answering question 1...

A joke crosses into bad taste when it actually starts to offend others and insult anything like their race, nationality, or any physical characteristics. It can be funny to a certain extent. Comedians should know when their jokes are actually funny, or go into bad taste.

I agree with your comment, because it's not polite to make jokes about someone that are really insulting.

    7. I agree with kool aid kid because when you crooss the line and you're just insulting them, its not funny. Like racist jokes can be funny sometimes but when its just insulting it's not funny.

  2. Question 3: Even though we live in a nation with freedom of speech, it does not give anyone the right to make condescending jokes. We all should respect one another's race, gender, and ethnicity and not make crude jokes about it. This needs to be put into effect because 'humorous' remarks that jab at a person can really hurt them; being the punchline is not a fun place to be.Therefore, we should all respect one another and bring a positive light into our jokes.

  3. Question 2: I believe that you yourself decides what is funny and what is rude. All of us have a different thoughts of what is funny and what is rude-like the people in the article,"Seth McFarlane: Crude or Classy? Delightful or a Dolt? You Be the Critic", they all have different ideas about what is funny. I think we determine where the line is when the joke starts hurt or insult you- like what koolaidkid319 said.

    1. Question 1: A joke crosses the line when it insults or hurts people for whatever reason and they take offense to it. Jokes can insult people and still be funny as long as the person that gets insulted either finds it funny or don't get offended. When making jokes you should be considerate of how your audiene feels and how they will take the joke so you won't offend or hurt them

    2. I Agree that you yourself decide if something is funny or rude. However, people should also be considerate of others, and if they think something they say might be taken wrongly by someone else, people should keep their thoughts to themselves to avoid controversy like with Seth McFarlane.

A joke really can cross a line when you talk like in a bad negative way like you joke to much and how Seth MacFarlane made Family Guy and etc., you kmnow how they joke around in the shows. Its just for T.V.s but some people that watch this shows make take effense or dont want their child watching the shows anymore. Because they take it too serious and some kids might repeat what they say in the show and they probably will get in trouble by there parents. I know i would if i repeat anything joke they said on Family Guy or any show and than say the joke to my momo or dad I probably would get in trouble. Thats why i really dont wath Family Guy that much even though i do like the show but still some stuff they say is inapporaite.

Yes, freedom of speech allows us to say what we want, when we want, including jokes. Just because we have freedom of speech, we should be considerate of others and be careful about what we say, although sometimes it comes out unintentionally. We should treat people the way we want to be treated, and there's always a limit to jokes that people can take. I agree with koolaidkid219. Jokes that start to offend people are not cool.

  6. #3.) We are a country that embraces free speech. However, free speech should not be used to an extent where what you say will end up portrayed in an offensive sense. yes, jokes are funny because they poke on people's attributes such as race, gender etc., but just because one finds it funny does not mean the whole world will. Freedom of speech allows us to voice our opinions and not get persecuted for saying something, but it does not give anyone the right to be offensive, rude, or disrespectful in any kind of way. We are a nation that has freedom of speech, but we are also a nation that believes in equality. If what someone says is discriminatory, then it violates our right to be equal. Freedom of speech does not allow anyone to hurt someone even if it was just a "joke."

  7. 2)I think that everyone has different tastes regarding jokes in today's society. The censorship companies may have a say in what comedians can't joke about but they aren't really restricting the comedians or even saying its not funny. I think that those parents who are overprotective of their children and see everything as a chance to corrupt their child are who decide whats really funny or not. They don't want their kids exposed to any of that kind of humor but are willing to meet halfway with fans and other comedians regarding how "offensive" the jokes are. They are never truly satisfied but keep their mouths shut until a comedian says or does something that could be counted as crossing the thin line that the parents established between whats rude and funny. There are others who have opinions and different styles of humors stating that they didn't think the jokes were funny, but those people never really care too much as to attack the comedian and his entire sense of humor itself on whether something is funny or not.Only those who are overly concerned are the ones who change everything and demand apologies if the line is crossed.

  8. I am answering question muber one.
A joke crosses the line into ''bad taste'' when the joke gets offensive instead of unny. The thing with me is if you talk about my race it may be a little funny at first, but it no longer becomes a joke when the person who is telling the joke is purposley offending you. I tottaly agree with koolaidkid319, when he or she says''Comedians should know when their jokes are actually funny, or go into bad taste''. Although some comedians obviously don't know what line the shouldn't cross.Thers a big thin line that people can cross when it comes to being funny but not offensive. Often the joke seems to turn to offensive when on comedian is a diffrent race from the race he or she is talking about. For example many people are okay when Kevin Heart talks about African Americans becase he is African American. If Seth McFarlane makes too may jokes about African Americans, they might get affended. All in all comedians should know how to be funny without being offensive.

  9. Question #3. Although we live in a country that exercises free speech, that doesn't necessarily give us the right to say EXACTLY what we want to say. There are times when you say something to a person and they take it in a more different meaning than what you actually wanted it to be... And that could be a bad thing. You certainly have to watch what you say because people don't see things the same way you do. Think about what you say because you could possibly cross the line and take things too far.

  10. Question 1
I think a joke crosses the line when it get too personal. Us as teen don't always don't know how to control our emotion and sometimes we just say how we fell about the person in a joke kinda way, like I know how to control my self when I'm joking around with my friends, for example if one of my friends is fit and he is eating a lot I might tell him "bro you look like a pic eating all that food" but I know not to tell someone that if there not fit because its going to offend them and then it gets personal and that's when a joke crosses into "bad taste"

Jokes are ment for everyone to laugh. In todays world we have racist and cruel jokes. A mean joke once in awhile is alright, but if some one is constantly telling hurtful jokes it becomes a type of bullying. Thats when it becomes bullying which could lead to low self esteem, anger, hatred, or in worse cases a suicide. The first couple jokes were alright because it Seth's job to be a comedian and to make it enetertaning to the public. It became to much when he kept over using the joke to a concentrated kind of people. He kept concentrating on woman and many would say he is being feminist. Many female viewers were watching the Oscars and that can cause the number of ratings drop. Seth should have said like 2 jokes on that subject and dropt it, but he didnt. He did cross the line by repeadidly target one subject. Seth tried to hard to make people luaght at a controversial joke.

  12. Question #3. I know we live in a country where we are allowed to exercise our right of freedom of speech, but that does not give us the freedom to say EXACTLY what we feel. We as people tend to speak without thinking and these cause misunderstandings. Although we don't mean the things we say people interpret them differently and this includes jokes. If we don't think before we speak then people will definitely misinterpret what we are saying. I agree with MB143 because we both had the same points.

  13. Nintendo144gms March 15, 2013 9:08 P.M. Question #1
I think the joke crosses into “bad taste” when it starts insulting other people and making fun of them. When Seth McFarlane “opened with a perhaps predictably juvenile and overlong bit,” it was considered funny and a little disturbing at first in the Oscar award show. But then he started going “over and over to the topic of women and how silly they are” by making rude jokes about them. Also, he ended the show “with a song calling out all the “losers” by name,” which is offensive to the actors and actresses that were nominated for the awards.

  14. I believe that jokes cross the line into "bad taste" when they become insulting and hurts the other persons feelings. It can also cross the line when someone doesn't stop and the jokes can cross the line and come across as harsh and mean. Different people look at jokes in different ways some people don't get hurt over jokes but others have a certain extent to where jokes can come across insulting and harsh.

It can be funny at first like the topic of women and how silly they are” by making rude jokes about them. But its because he kept going over and over it that it became rude and hurtful.

I think a bad joke crosses the line when the other person is offended. In our generation of teens, it has changed. Sometimes, the person that makes fun of someone the most, are considered best friends. This sometimes sets the line into making worse and offending jokes. I believe that a joke can't always be used to talk to people.

Sometimes when you joke around & its a reputation, some people may find it funny knowing that's your personality or other way around people might take it as childish, rude, mean,if you make comments about them or people surrounding. Then people could say you have "bad taste" or a "bad mouth".
& I'm going to respond to Ezio Aditore I agree because if i were to answer that question i would put something like that.

    answer to question 3

i believe you have the right ro freedom of speech but you also have to mind others. jokes are perfectly fine. unless they are crossing the imaginary line of respect towards one another or hurting/putting other people down for the sake of laughter. "It seems like it's very difficult for awards show organizers to learn the lesson that an awards show is not a roast. It's not there to pull the rug out from under Hollywood and zing the heck out of everybody and show 'em a thing or two." this experct from one of the articles supports my thesis becaue it also depicts the need to not having to disrespect others repeadtly to tell a joke

3.Just because we live in a nation where the freedom of speech is allowed, dosn't mean you can take advantage of that.Freedom of speech was meant for the people to be able to speek freely, and openly while stating their opinions to defend their right. It was not meant to be used as an excuse to talk badly apon each other,or make rude jokes that might offend someone.

    i agree with koolaidkid319,andHello123.

  20. Jeremy,

Question 1, When does a joke cross the line... A joke has crossed the line by when you make the joke offensive you can make jokes to be funny but not to talk about people. They shouldn't be putting negativity in peoples head you want to motivate people in a funny way, so when people get hurt by the joke means the joke went to far and you should stop.

I believe that jokes are suppose to be funny, but when a joke starts to cross the line into "bad taste" when a person starts to feel bad and insulted.A joke can also cross the line when a person keeps on telling jokes and wont stop even if the jokes arent funny anymore. Most of the time a person will make fun of her/his best friend but will never khow when they have crossed the line untill they notice he/she is upset.

I enjoyed hello 123 and agreed with the first two. I believe that people have free will to say wat they want. But hello 123 was saying they don't which I strongly disagree with other people talked about they might take it to far yes that is true but does not mean its not funny. And to answer question one if you take it to in a bad way than it was not your type of comedy. Their are many types of comedy and that's not yours so you shouldn't put your self In the situation if you didn't like the jokes from the beginning.

    3) Although we live in a nation where we embrace freedom of speech, I don't think all jokes should be said."...... his conviction that saying "boobs" enough times.....", is what Linda Holmes said about it and I agree with her because you don't know if you're going to offend somebody so you should stick with more appropriate jokes. I also agree with Live_2Dance because you may feel a certain way about a person (good or bad), but that doesn't mean to straight up say what you want to say about that person. Things like that can hurt someone's feelings really bad.
