(9th) Discussion #17

Welcome back, freshmen. I have an interesting challenge for you this time which involves the following materials:
  • your notes about sonnets
  • the poems/lyrics you chose for your poetry project
  • some creativity!
___________________________________

Your job is to turn a stanza (or two) of one of your chosen songs/poems into a sonnet. Below is an example from the winner of a contest given by the Washington Post:

O proud left foot, that ventures quick within
Then soon upon a backward journey lithe.
Anon, once more the gesture, then begin:
Command sinistral pedestal to writhe.
Commence thou then the fervid Hokey-Poke,
A mad gyration, hips in wanton swirl.
To spin! A wilde release from Heavens yoke.
Blessed dervish! Surely canst go, girl.
The Hoke, the poke -- banish now thy doubt
Verily, I say, 'tis what it's all about.

-- by "William Shakespeare" (Jeff Brechlin)

Sound familiar? Here are the original lyrics:

You put your left foot in, you put your left foot out,
You put your left foot in, and you shake it all about!

...and so on. You see? Note that this is not a true sonnet, because it has only 10 lines. However, you get the idea!

___________________________________

So, here are your instructions in detail:
  1. Choose one of your poems/songs that you were asked to find for class.
  2. In your post, please give us the title of the work, the stanza(s) you are using, AND the sonnet you created from those lines.
  3. Please choose between ITALIAN, SHAKESPEAREAN, or BLANK VERSE style of sonnet, and do your best to follow the style.
  4. Don't worry about using weird language like in the sample! Use the language of the lyrics/original poem as much as possible.
If, by chance, you have completely forgotten everything about sonnets and your notes are unavailable, here are a couple of handy links:

  1. Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Judy Garland --- A Sonnet by Katnissneverclean

Somewhere atop this bow of colors, far from where I stand
Somewhere atop this arc of wonder, atmospheres are azure
And the visions you venture with may actually come alive.
Perhaps I’ll sent a request and lay it upon a sun
And awake in a new land with the vast white masses long gone.
This is where worries slip like sand through fingers,
Too far above the smokestacks to imagine,
That’s where you might be surprised to find me.
Somewhere beyond this bridge of Gods, blue feathers take flight.
For If they flutter over this wonder,
    For what reason can’t I?
For if swooning, sweeping, diving, leaping,
    “They can!” I cry.
    “Why not I?”

    -Stanzas I'm using:
"A gracious melody you want to find"
"To sing forever a deep music stream"
-Katnissneverclean your poem is so vibrant and full of life.It was so vivid that I could actually see it.

A gracious melody you want to find
A sliver of light for your life, knowing
    Eternally forever in your mind
    Leaves you intoxicated and glowing

When skies are gray and no where to run to
A simple tune will lift your spirits up
    Your happiness is too long-overdue
Holding in your tears will leave you corrupt

Listening to the many sublime chimes
Perpetual tunes stuck inside your head
Never ceasing and never lost in time
"You can't bring me down.I am strong" he said

To sing forever a deep music stream
He never flickers, but he always gleams

Sports inspire us through ups and downs
to do many things while you compete
a win and a loss will come around
so come ready and light on your feet

play not for yourself but with the team
    on as-fault,court, diamond or field
you and your teammates share a common dream
as emotions in game can often be peeled

    a championship, the common goal
everyone comes to play at their best
    as competitiveness takes its toll
a chip on shoulder and weight off your chest

you and your team are destined to win
now a celebration, mass of grins

  5. If you ever leave me, baby,
Leave some morphine at my door
Cause it would take a whole lot of medication
To realize what we used to have,
    We don't have it anymore.

There's no religion that could save me
No matter how long my knees are on the floor, oh
So keep in mind all the sacrifices I'm making
To keep you by my side
And keep you from walking out the door.

    Cause there'll be no sunlight
    if I lose you, baby

    Its good to be helpful
    Its nice to give back
    Sometimes being a little helpful

    Can mean the difference
    In someone else's day
    Sometimes something as simple
    As sharing a little time
    A little extra energy
    Taking that little extra effort
To be a little more helpful
    Can have huge effects
    For the people
    Who are receiving your kindness
And who you are being helpful to

    *Stanza:
"There's always gonna be another mountain
I'm always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be an uphill battle
Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose"

    *Sonnet

There's always gonna be several obstacles

You're just gonna have to overcome them,

if you want to make your dreams come true.

Who cares if there's people looking at you.

There is always gonna be some type of battle

You just need to push through

    You're not always gonna win

Sometimes you're gonna have to lose

It's not about the pace you're going

It's about the people who are cheering you on.

  8. BLANK VERSE

    Future creation

You give up on what is at hand
    yet you care about society
It will judge you until the end
    except the future is vague
it can be made as a goal
    that the past creates
    if you don't give up
    and continue trying

    I know how it feels
i understand you, but wait a moment
make it fun although it is hard
    survive and live again
    because if you have anger,
that will be as boring as life without soccer

  10. May Sarton-For my Mother
    I summon you now
    Not to think of
    As she lifts her eyebrow
    When she looks from above
    The ceaseless battle
    With pain and ill health
    Held in Seattle
    Full of all this filth.
    The frailty and the anguish.
    The lion-hearted
Telling me as I cook a fish
Her eyes that are so complicated
    Thats my creator
    Thats my mother.
    I summon you now
    Not to think of
    The ceadless battle
With pain a nd ill health,
    The frailty and the anguish.
    No, today I remember
    The creator,
    The lion-hearted.
I like @katnissneverclean's poem, its deep, it felt real, very good descriptions. :D

  11. Shakespear

Like as the waves make towards the pebbled shore,
    So do our minutes hasten to their end;
Each changing place with that which goes before,
In sequent toil all forwards do contend.
Nativity, once in the main of light,
Crawls to maturity, wherewith being crown’d,
Crooked elipses ’gainst his glory fight,
And Time that gave doth now his gift confound.
Time doth transfix the flourish set on youth
And delves the parallels in beauty’s brow,
Feeds on the rarities of nature’s truth,
And nothing stands but for his scythe to mow:
And yet to times in hope my verse shall stand,
Praising thy worth, despite his cruel hand.

    Basketball is my favorite sport
I love it like no other
Dribbling up and down the court
    Elavating my game further

    Always play to win
    Never play to lose
Give my best when i'm in
    Give full effort never cruise

    Tie my shoes tight
    Ready for the war
    Battle hard during the fight
    Till you can't give anymore

    The sweet feel of victory
Is why you try to compete

'We forget about time, yet it's all we would know
In time, there is everything, and time will show ' stanza its based on

    sonnet: Shakespearean sonnet

Time is what the world revolves around
you cant see it or hear time itself but behold
you can see as time goes the concrete cracks in the town
and the young folks of tomorrow turn the be elderly old.

another example of time is school
one minute your in highschool then your off to college
to a hard college bed from the bed you filled with drool
but you are also gaining adding to your teen knowledge

so if i gave you a book of your life would you read it?
and read it to the end and know every event?
or build your unknown legacy with a carpenters' kit?
only you can decide how YOUR time is spent

so time is in your hands
time is everything so now what are your life plans ?

I like this sonnet, because it talks about time and that we should use it wisely. Also, i like the way he uses the poem and create a Shakespearean sonnet out of it, like the rhyme scheme.

  14. from Monroe98:

    "I am timid and
    I am oversensitive
    I am a lioness
    I am tired and defensive
You take me in your arms
    And I fall into you
    I have insecurities
You show me I am beautiful"

    "I am" Christina Aguilera

    Italian Sonnet

    I am a timid lioness
    Tired and defensive
those harmful blows made me oversensitive
    These insecurities are timeless
    They make me feel lifeless
Your the thing that makes me less aggressive
I can't believe you take down these fences
    I no longer feel defenseless

    I fall into you
Because you show me I am beautiful
With you things seem less blue
    Things happened and I'm regretful
The time for forgetting these things is long past due
But my future with you keeps me hopeful

I liked the higher language that Katnissneverclean used in her sonnet! It sounded very professional.

  15. Title:Soccer Author:Isaiah Bess
"Have you ever been on a soccer field?
Well if you haven't it’s the m amazing thing
It’s like being in heaven but on grass
When the grass is just cut and the potato bugs are jumping in the air it gives you energy to have fun

And if you have been on a field then you know how the freshly cut grass
stings your nose and enlightens your heart to give you extra strength to
play soccer harder than you ever have in your life. That is what it’s like being on a soccer field!" These are the stanzas my sonnet is based on.

    Shakespearean Sonnet

Has one ever experienced a soccer field?
It is the best thing yet
If drivers pass, they must yield
And if a game starts, they must make a bet

Soccer is a fantasy, just on land
With the grass trimmed and bugs all about
Soccer is even better than a rock band
Not liking it is something I highly doubt

The feel of the grass on your face,
Is just part of the fun.
When you run harder and harder just a like a race,
    The fun has just begun.

Soccer will be the best forever.
Me not liking it? HA! Never!

“Don’t stop now in the path”

Don’t stop now in the path
    The path has just began
There is so much you can do on this path
    The path is yours now
    Go run to the path
    The path must be taken
The path is only here for a limited time
Don’t stop now in the path
    Your all most there
You just have to stay on the right path
The path will bring you home
This path is like no other path
This path takes you any where
Don’t stop now in the path

  17. Nintendo144gms February 4, 2013 4:37 P.M Poem by: Maya Angelou, from Insomniac(sonnet form):
The nights that I have been in
Have played my sleep till light
For I don't remember how it is
To peacefully be asleep at night

Aloof and disdainful my sleep has bring
So my Wiles that I have will surely win
For I kept using changes to me for wing
So I won't end up sleeping in the bin.

But its service proved to be vain
For my wiles has been proved no use
So I hopped on bed and kept being lain
As my sleepiness has proved to be loose

I waited and waited for the pain to be less
when I happened to be weaker than the sleeplessness

  18. "Hands" by Sarah Kay

"...I don't remember the reason he gave me,/ and I would've been upset but there were far too many stuffed animals to hold,/ too many homework assignments to write, too many boys to wave too/ many years to grow..."

    and

"...We used to have a game, my dad and I, about holding hands/ cause we held hands everywhere, and every time either he or I would whisper a great big/ number to the other, pretending that we were keeping track of how many times/ we had held hands that we were sure this one had to be eight million two thousand seven hundred and/ fifty three..."

    Blank verse

We used to have a game

We would play all the time

    where we would hold hands

    and whisper made up numbers

Lying that we knew just how many

Times we had each held hands

    'Eight million two thousand

    Seven hundred and fifty three'

Then, once, I reached for his hand

    And our fingers locked perfectly,

    Though he then changed positions

And said that hand hold was for mom.

I would've been upset but there were far too

Many stuffed animals for me to hold.

  19. Sweet Nothing by Calvin Harris
    (blank)
You took my heart and you held it in your mouth
And, with the word all my love came rushing out
And, every whisper, it's the worst,
Emptied out by a single word
There is a hollow in me now

So I put my faith in something unknown
I'm living on such sweet nothing
But I'm tired of hope with nothing to hold
I'm living on such sweet nothing
    And it's hard to learn
    And it's hard to love
When you're giving me such sweet nothing
    Sweet nothing, sweet nothing
You're giving me such sweet nothing
