(10th) Weekend Discussion #1

Your question for the week has to do with the topic of REDEMPTION:

"A good act does not wash out the bad, nor a bad act the good. Each should have its own reward."
-- George R.R. Martin, A Clash of Kings

We'll keep it easy this week -- do you agree with this quote, and why? Can we give ourselves a "clean slate" by doing more good deeds than bad ones? Do the consequences of "bad acts" ever truly disappear from our lives?

  1. In my opinion a clean slate is what you make of it, and by that i mean if you think you have done good things then you may see yourself as a good person and the same for bad things. But it is then your opinion but in my opinion, your records shall remain what they are, and good luck with your attempt to change what has been recorded in the history books. Bad acts will stay with you, as well as good acts. I know we are humans we make mistakes or we make someone mad, that in my mind is bad and i can say i have made those mistakes but once again good luck getting rid of them.

  2. LoveBug,
I do not agree with this comment because: once you do a "bad deed" consequences come with it, not rewards, you only get rewarded when you do "good deeds".I believe we humans cannot just give ourselves a "clean slate" just because we do more "good deeds" over bad ones, it doesnt make you a better person, especially if you keep on going back to do bad deeds.Bad acts never actually disapper.. like my parents would always say, "whenever you sin and lie about it, it'll always end up coming back to you" so basically bad acts will never disappear.

I kind of a agree with the quote that if you do good things there will be a reward, because if you help a person with their troubles they might return the favor. But the bad acts may have a reward, and yes you might make a bed deed without realizing that it was actually bad and it was a mistake, but there is a saying that(I'm just human, I have weaknesses, I make mistakes, and I experience sadness; but I learn from all these things to make me a better person). The reward is making your self a better person.

  4. Hello123,
I agree wholeheartedly with this quote and I believe that there will never be a “clean slate.” The past deeds will always follow you wherever you go, and every step you make creates a footprint. For example, a child breaks a vase. The child can try to mend it with as many methods as he wants, but the vase will always be imperfect and scarred. The same goes with bad deeds. After committing a cruel act, one might try to fix it with acts of kindness, but the bad deed will always tarnish the person’s reputation. Likewise, good deeds will receive its rewards. One good deed will produce a next, and the chain reaction begins.

    1. But will those good deeds cover up the past? What if it came to light again? :/

    2. The good deeds wont cover up the past, but it will always be a reminder that you are not that kind of person anymore

  5. ImWritingSomething,
There's a saying in my family that goes, "It's so easy to get into trouble, yet so hard to get out." It's like crumbling a piece of paper. You can try your best to get all the wrinkles out, but there will always be a few. I'm not saying that it is completely impossible to clear your name, but even if you are forgiven, the person (or people) may never forget what you have done. You know the saying, "forgive, but don't forget".Sometimes even, referring to the second part, "nor a bad act the good," it depends on the magnitude of the "bad thing".
I'm not sure if this means I agree with the quote or not, but what I had to say is what I feel about this kind of delimma.

    1. I agree with that quote about "forgive but dont forget." It shows that not just anyone can forget just like that, personally I can. It was valuble to him and I lost it and I still dont have money to repay him but he forgave me. So what I'm trying to really say is no one can really be that forgiving. All bads things and be stanned forever and it may faded but shall never removed permentlly from someone mind.

  6. Jeremy,

In my opinion nobody gets rewarded when they make bad decisions you get consequences, when you make good choices and that is when you get rewarded.Nobody is perfect were they don't make bad choices and don't get consequences, when you make good choices people are more likely to remember what you did and don't hold your past against you.So you only get rewarded when you've made good decisions.

  7. I don't think you can fully erase all the bad things that you have done in your life because the past will come up at some point in time. You can never go back and fix your mistakes. Once it's done, there's no turning back. I think you should do more good deeds so people can trust you and think you are responsible. Plus, if you do make a bad choice, I don't think the consequences will be as bad.

  8. I personally don't agree with the quote because I believe a good act can wash out a bad one depending on what the situation is. I believe and don't believe we can give ourselves a clean slate after doing bad acts. If a person keeps making mistakes and never learns from them then I don't believe they can get a clean slate. But if a person makes some bad mistakes and learns from them and tries to be a better person, I think they do deserve a clean slate. Bad acts will never truly disappear from a person’s life because they would always be remembered and can come back to them in the future.
