(10th) Weekend Discussion #12

"Who the [heck] wants to hear actors talk?"
- H. M. Warner (1881-1958), founder of Warner Brothers, in 1927

CONSIDER: Movies began as silent films, and “acting” meant doing everything that you could to display the story, plot and conflict without the use of words or sounds – music was added to film before the spoken word. Has the inclusion of sounds (specifically the voices of the cast) improved the quality of film? Also, consider music and soundtrack – does it have an effect on the success or failure of a film? What role does sound have in drawing the audience into a film?

Remember to use examples (both good and bad) from films you know about to help make your points and support your ideas!

  1. The inclusion of voices in movies help to create a more detailed story in the movie, but it also has its drawbacks. It seems that more people focus on the sounds rather than the real story. The music does make the atmosphere for a certain scene and create a perception in the viewers mind. Soundtracks do help to bring out the basic theme without making it too obvious. Also, movies that use soundtracks help to draw an ambience that can immensely help,or ruin a movie.

  2. I agree with "After All this Time... Always" on their phrase "more people focus on the sounds rather than the real story." Also, dialogue in movies based on novels often strays from dialogue in the books, and most fans want the movie to be closely correlated to the book. For example, many Harry Potter and Hunger Games fans are unhappy with the portrayal of the book because it does stay true to the author's depiction. I believe that music plays a key role in the success of the movie: a soundtrack that fits the mood of the film causes the viewers to be fully immersed in the film. In conclusion, I believe having actors talk in movies is a drawback and music plays a key role in the audience's mood.
