(9th) Weekend Discussion #12

"The difference between fiction and reality? Fiction has to make sense."
- Tom Clancy

“Truth is stranger than fiction, because truth is obliged to stick to possibilities.”
- Mark Twain

CONSIDER: These two authors have very similar views on the creation of fiction; do you believe they are right, and why? Could reality possibly be stranger than the worlds we read about in fantasy or science fiction? Whether or not you agree, give examples from life (or fiction) to highlight your point!

  1. I believe that these two authors are right, because reality can be stranger than fiction. For instance, if a man jumped off a building and survived(in the real world), some might be awed, while others will say that it is fake. BUT if it were to be in a fiction based story, it would not be as suprising. It would make sense. No one would question the possibilities of how he jumped off the building and survived. It would then be uninteresting, because it was predicted, unlike in real life, where it brings up curiosity.

  2. I believe they are right. Reality is stranger because whatever happens in reality, it always has possibilities that it can be proven by. They can be the strangest possibilities but you never know because it is reality and not everything can be explained. An example is a shot fuel tank of a car. Fiction, or what we expect, is that it will explode as the hot bullet touches the flammable liquid when in reality, it just causes a leak in the tank.

  3. Before i say anything, I LOVE FEEDING THE FISH. Anyway, I think Tom Clancy and Mark Twain's idea of "stranger than fiction" is quite true. Agreed, reality is stranger than fiction when you can't see what's going on. If you were an author of a book, you could make life how you want it. You could be rich, famous, attractive, etc. but in life you can't choose who you are, only how you react to what's put in front of you. In real life there are no trial runs, only errors and success. The idea that other people cannot be controlled is what makes it stranger than fiction. You can't control that robber on channel 5. you can't control Obama winning presidency. you can't even control who is your friend! But you can control what to do with what you've got. I certainly agree with these two quotes. Reality IS stranger than fiction.

  4. I think both authors have a great point. In fiction, unrealistic things can happen. In reality , if someone were to say that they got swallowed by a shark and still survived no one would believe them. If it happened in fiction, it wouldn't come to as much of a shock to the reader.

Well, i think they're half right, because sometimes fiction doesn't make sense and the truth isn't stranger sometimes. But in some situations, yes, because there may be something in real life that can surprise you about the difference between it and fiction. For example, In some fiction stories, the plot ends with the phrase "happily ever after" when the wedding ends, where in reality, it goes way beyond that and you have to learn to live with your spouse.

  6. from Destroyer619:

Fiction is a story that isn't true, non-fiction, or what Clansy and Twain calls, reality is what really happened in past or present. I agree with both authors, because fiction could be something made up by someone else, be it an event, a holiday, a fact, etc. However in reality, you can't change what's really going to take place. For example, if the world was your own fictional paradise, you could make everything go your way. Think of a car getting stuck on the tracks of an oncoming frieght train. Fictionally, the train could stop, grow hands, and place the car on the road again. However, in reality, it takes the train a long time to stop, so the only possibility left is the car getting ramed. Fiction is made by someone else's mindset, but reality can't be stopped, by you, me or anyone else except God. Tom and Mark were right, reality is stranger than fiction, very strange indeed.

  7. I agree with both authors that fiction is better because if some people read reality it is kind of boring. Fiction is where it is the most interesting because it doesnt feel like reality and some people like to live in their own world
