(10th) Weekend Discussion #15

"Any man who is under 30, and is not a liberal, has no heart; and any man who is over 30,
and is not a conservative, has no brains."
- Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965)

CONSIDER: What might Churchill, through this quotation, be saying about the human mind as it grows older? How do the “brain” and the “heart” play into our decisions at both a young and an older age? Is this statement merely about politics, or does it have a deeper application?

Please consider that we have learned three essential parts necessary to answer a question:
·                     Idea statement (similar to a thesis; summarizes your point)
·                     Evidence (in this case, the evidence is your experience and knowledge)
·                     Explanation (combine with evidence to prove your point)

Use this format to answer these weekend discussions from now on; please also do these things:
·                     Use a pseudonym (pen name) and not your real name when posting,
·                     Respond to someone else’s answer whenever possible, and
·                     Be polite and positive at all times!

You have until Monday, December 17, 2012 @ 5:00 PM to comment on this posting. At 5:00 comments will close.

THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE FOR WEEKEND DISCUSSION UNTIL JANUARY 2013!!!!

  1. this quote is telling us about the difference between old people and young people.
this quote is saying that the younger people make decisions with what they feel is right and the older people chose on what they think its right, i think all this relates that what people say that teenagers don't know to pick the right think because they are younger or they chose the wrong thing, there are always saying that you should always listen the the older people because they are wiser.
that what i think about this quote and what it relates to the teenagers and them always making the wrong choice

  3. The comment might mean that when the human mind gets older it starts depending on the wisdom and intellect rather than the feelings that come from the heart. When people are younger they depend more on the heart than the mind, which leads to "impulsive" behavior and irrational decisions. When people are older they rely more on the brain to make decisions. This statement isn't merely about politics, this statement is about people in general.

  4. I agree with John Greysworth i think older people are wiser because of their past experiences. They know what is best because they have probably been in that same situation. Youger people usually get told to "follow your heart" or "listen to what your heart tells you" rather than using your brain to think because youger people sometimes don't know what choice to make. Sometimes if they do make a decision without following their heart, it might end up being the wrong decision.

  5. in my perspective, i think Churchill was trying to say was that younger people decide things based on thoughts and their mind and that they don't decide things from what their heart wants. for say older people decide things by their heart and how they feel about the situation than thinking about what is going on.

  6. In my opinion what Churchill is trying to say about human minds as they grow older is that as men continue to grow older there minds become wiser and they grow in there heart and what they feel. But when us humans are younger we tend to do stupid things of what we think, not feel... and until we become more mature like "Men over 30", "Men under 30" do what there brain tell's them to.

  7. In my opinion young people makes choices on what there heart feels cuase teenagers makes choices that will make more populaer and socialized in there life but they dont think on what there decision is whether it be sex, drugs or anything but old people actually consider both there heart and mind

i respectfully disagree with everick johnson;in my personal perspective i belive that MR.Chuchchill is saying quit the opposit. i belive he is simply saying that the young human mind makes many desions with their hearts rathier then thier minds,or as mr.chuchcill put it a "conseervative"way.i belive that our minds have the power to change the world ,but it is our hearts that will make that change happen.our minds and hearts go hand and hand in almost every decision we make, whitherit is a simple decision like if we will do our homework or a huge decision that will change your life like the decision to get married.and on the matter of if this statment is merly about politics i belive that it has a much deeper meaning and that is when we are young most of the decisions we make are liberal or open minded, but as we mature they should become more conservative.

As our mind grow older, and stronger we tend to develope or mind and think more to the extreme. And thats when the "heart" comes in. When we are young we always depend on what our "heart" tells us to do.But you get older you realize that you have to use your mind. You may have gone through some things and realized that its not about what your heart tells you,its about what your mind tells you.I think this also could be with politics or with deeper thoughts. With politics, people sometimes can be more liberal while there just in school.Once they hit the streets, they realize that they got to pay there bills, or pay of taxes, or student loans from collage.Thats when they probably switched over to being a conservastive. With deeper connections,as were young we use our heart to follow the way, as we become more older and wiser, we begin to know that its our brains that really know the way.

He is saying that the older you get the more you use your wisdom and experience on making decisions, whereas when your younger you go by how you feel and what's in your heart. For example, as teenagers we always talk about how we feel about something and how do and don't like someone or something. Once we get older, we take what we once felt and use that as experience which creates wisdom so we can us more knowledge on how to make decisions and what to say. Kind of like when my dad always tells me I need to get as mic wisdom from the older people because they've been through everything I'm going through now. This is true because nothing is new under the sun. All in all as humans, while we are in our youth we tend to be more affected by our feelings and in our old age we start to take our experiences and use as knowledge and wisdom for how we are affected.=
