Socratic Seminar Grading Notes

Your role in a seminar:
  • to complete the readings and preparation for the seminar (coding, noticing/naming, documenting quotations, etc.),
  • to participate in the seminar as much as possible by offering text-supported comments, observations, and opinions, and
  • to offer respect to all members of discussion, even in light of a disagreement.

The teacher's role in a seminar:
  • to observe all conversation,
  • to record types of comments and opinions made, and
  • to be an outside moderator with little interaction with the group

Grading marks:
  • C = general comment
  • O = personal opinion
  • OR = repeat of opinion / agree
  • DO = disagree with an opinion
  • O+ = unique insight
  • T = opinion with text evidence/reference
  • E = expanding on another's opinion
  • CL = clarified another's opinion
  • A = comment/opinion applies to real situation

Remember -- the goal of a seminar is to go over what YOU want to discuss about the lesson or reading in a comfortable, open forum.
