"A poem is never finished, only
abandoned."
- Paul Valery
(1871-1945)
CONSIDER: Can pieces of art (or other work) be truly considered finished, or merely works in progress? Is there a point to obsessively trying to “finish” things, or is there a point where one can stop with satisfaction? Why does man seek perfection or a finish to all things? Why are we constantly dissatisfied with our progress in work?

Personally, I don't think any piece of art is truly finished as there's always something to change, and if you try obsessively to finish something, you will always be dissatisfied with your finished piece. I think man seeks perfection as we always seek something we don't have and want to acquire. As no one is perfect, man will always try, and fail, to find perfection/a finish. Because we are always trying to find what we don't have, and since art isn't right or wrong, we will never be happy with what we have.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this. I write poems sometimes and whenever I'm supposedly done, i think of something else to put in it. with any kind of art, it is hard to tell if something truly has finished or not. in this case, it has to be abandoned for nothing else to be added to it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the first comment. I think that if you "finish" something, you'll always find flaws in it and want to make it better. I don't think any work of art can be absolutely perfect. You'll always want to add things, remove things, and replace other things. People always search for perfection, but never find it because they will always find something wrong.
ReplyDeletefrom Boxman Jr.:
ReplyDeleteArt is never finished to the one who created it. When one creates an art and then is satisfied with it, if they look at it again much time later, they will see all these things they could've done to "improve" it. Perfection is something we can chase after but never truly get, like the wind. If something seems perfect at one time, over time its shine and glory will slowly give away to the one who made it, even if everyone else who sees it thinks its amazing.
